Newton Forrest Cornerstone 2002

Newton Forrest Cornerstone 2002

Red
BN#181933

Our 2002 Cornerstone is a blend of 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 31% Malbec.
The Result: a deep generous wine with vibrant blue/red colours, ripe berry fruit flavours and hints of raw cut tobacco and violets. Youthful, the palate is full with excellent depth and richness, spicy aromas, all supported by an abundance of silky tannins. Without question a superb example from the Gimblett Gravels region – the best since 1998.

Wine & Spirits Best Cabernet Blend of New Zealand - Refined and silky, this dark, savory blend of Bordelais varieties is intensely flavored without intense ripeness. It's an impressive release from a joint venture between viticulturist Bob Newton and vintner John Forrest, sourced from a vineyard planted in 1988. Score: 94.

Wine Spectator Light in texture, ripe in flavor, with floral blackberry and gentle, Bordeaux-like spices lingering on the ripe, cedary finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. Drink now through 2008. 2,000 cases made. Score: 90. —Harvey Steiman, November 30, 2004.

Wine Enthusiast A pleasant surprise in a recent sampling of Hawkes Bay blends, this wine verges on being overripe, yet still boasts ample structure. Black cherry and plum fruit is marked by vanilla and cinnamon, while the mouthfeel is one of contained lushness, not gloppy or syrupy. Drink now-2012. The blend is roughly one-third of each variety. Score: 89. —Joe Czerwinski, July 01, 2006.
